Description:-
A classic route around Scar House Reservoir ,with some exceptional views over the reservoir . Can be extended by travelling down to Anagram reservoir and traversing the large water pipe if you've got the bottle!
Park on the road opposite the hotel. Don't be tempted to park on the hotel car park . They will ask you move .
Head north on the road and look out for the small road triangle. Take a left and head to the gate and pass through it onto the farm track. Continue on this bridleway as it turns into a grassy track. You will meet the final gate and join a short sharp descent on a rough lane which comes out at the back of the caravan park. Follow the road down to the main road ,and take the road ( and the steep climb) into Lofthouse. Pick up Moor Lane ( byway and not a bridleway as marked on the maps) to the left and follow this along its length to the Scar House Reservoir. The descent is quite rough. Take a left and ride to the dam ,and cross it. Take a left up the track ,and then a right and follow the track that circles the reservoir. Look out for the track on the left which will take you to the tarmac road . Take a left here ,and then right onto the gravel track. This takes you onto to Nidderdale Moor. At the first junction take the right hand lane ,and follow this . Get some speed up to appreciate it to its fullest. . Bear right when you meet up with another track ,and then right again at the next junction. Follow this restricted byway down to the village. There are several gates. At the final gate ( joins tarmac) take a left and follow the tarmac road which becomes a farm track. Follow this along the length of Gouthwaite reservoir. The track becomes tarmac again, passes a pub to the left, and rejoins the road. Take a left and ride down the road back to the hotel. Great route.
