Description:-
This route takes you through the ancient oakwoods of Ariundle, and then out onto the rugged hillside up to some former lead mines. From the map, it may appear possible to do a circular route rather than an out-and-back, but the lower track past Ceann a Chreagain is very boggy and indistinct in parts.
The route:
From the FC carpark, start up the wide track signed for Airigh Fhionndial and marked with an oakleaf. Ignore a path going off to the right - this is for horses and leads to a ford over the river.
About 3km from the carpark, the path forks. Take the left hand fork, which continues to climb through the oakwoods, then crosses a small stream and emerges onto the open hillside.
From this point on, the path is narrower and rockier, but remains completely rideable in all but very extreme weather. Continue along the path until you reach the mines.
The return route is the reverse of the outward route for the first few km. However, halfway back to the carpark, there is a path leading off to the left which takes you down to cross the river and follows a nicely flowing section of singletrack alongside the river for a short distance. This track then recrosses the river, bringing you back onto the outward track. Turn left along this to return to the carpark.
