Description:-
These directions are from starting at Newcastleton, if starting at Kielder start at f.11.
To start with follow the waymarked signs for the red from Dykecroft car park, at f.1 take the red ST, enjoy the first section it is nice and flowing and a long time until the next ST, for the brave you can try the northshore black route and rejoin the red further down.
When you get to the Stane (f.3) turn right and leave the red route, follow the forest road, then turn left at f.4 and shadow Kershope Burn until the footbridge (f.5) cross the bridge and border and onto some ST which then joins another forest road.
You now loose a lot of height, enjoy as you have some climbing coming up. At f.7 turn left and follow the forest road round until you come to some ST on your right for a short stiff climb on to more forest road. You are now onto the Lonesome Pine trail continue on but keep a look out for some new singletrack on your right (f.9) which is not signed yet. At f.10 continue past the trail on your left (you climb this on your way back) and start the descent on your right just a few metres further up. Follow the trail until you get to Kielder village.
There's 2 bike shops, a pub, a cafe, and toilets if you require before you start your return.
You have the option of taking the Lonesome Pine route which follows the Lakeside Way then peels off at Lewis Burn this is waymarked and easy to follow and rejoins this route at the top of the climb above f.8. Otherwise follow the road south out of Kielder and turn right at f.12 to help identify this turning there is a crash barrier on the right side of it. Climb steadily uphill which becomes very steep for a while eventually joining the Lonesome pine trail again. Once back on the Lonesome Pine trail go up to f.10 and take the ST which you earlier went past, continue climbing and turn left at the junction on the northshore f.14. It is now ST until you cross the border again at f.15.
It's worth taking the time to read the tolls on the pillar. Once past this the trail climbs up to a mast which you pass on your right. You now descend for a while be careful not to overshoot the left turn onto a track at f.16. when you get to f.17 join the ST on your left and you are onto the last section of the Newcastleton Blue trail which you follow back to the car park.
