I really enjoyed this route. I think 2.5hrs is about what it took me although i rode most of the road section at the end hands free at an easy pace on what was a very lovely evening. Most of the ascent, before getting on to cairn leuchan proper is steady rather than really steep. It's not an easy climb but once you find a rhythm and a suitable gear it isnt technical i.e you dont have to worry about grip or difficult conditions on the surface. The last part of the ascent is more difficult. I have rapid rob 2.25 tyres and these are good for general cross country but on the steep loose and rocky upper parts of this climb I had to shift my weight right to the back of the bike for grip. Then i nearly did a wheelie multiple times. In the end i put my foot down a couple of times. This was mainly due to struggling to ballance rather than tiredness. Once you are at the top, its worth stopping and admiring views of Mt Keen to the south , Lochnagar to the west + Cairngorms to the North. |
